(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - The Thomas More College men's soccer team defeated across-the-river rival Mount St. Joseph University, 2-1, today (Sunday, August 31, 2014) in its home opener at The Bank of Kentucky Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
With the win, the Saints improve to 2-0 and with the loss, the Lions fall to 1-1.
Thomas More took a 1-0 lead early in the second half when sophomore midfielder Wheeler Blersch (Anderson Township, Ohio/Covington Catholic) scored off an assist from senior defender Jack Little (Versailles, Ky./Woodford County) at the 47:38 mark. MSJ tied the match at the 67:37 mark when Zachary Kilmer found the back of the net.
Freshman midfielder Eli Nienaber (LaGrange, Ky./Bishop Brossart) scored the eventual game-winning goal off an assist from senior defender Pat Jacobson (Washington Borough, N.J./Warren Hills) at the 76:20 mark.
Senior goalkeeper Matt Kees (Covington, Ky./Scott) earned the win in goal as he played all 90 minutes and allowed one goal.
Thomas More out-shot Mount St. Joseph, 17-1, including 2-1, on goal and won the battle of corner kicks, 10-1.
The Saints return to action on Friday (September 5) when they travel to Danville, Kentucky to play Spalding University on the first day of the 25th Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic hosted by Centre College. The match is started to begin at 5:30 p.m.
