(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - The Thomas More College softball team swept across-the-river rival, the College of Mount St. Joseph today (Thursday, March 28, 2013) in a non-conference doubleheader at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. The Saints won game one, 6-0, and the nightcap, 5-0.
With the sweep, the Saints improve to 9-9 on the season and the Lions fall to 3-9.
In the first game, Thomas More scored four in the second, one in the third and one in the fifth and held MSJ scoreless for the 6-0 victory.
Freshman pitcher Mamee Salzer (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry) earned the win in the circle as she pitched all seven innings and gave up only five hits, while striking out six.
At the plate, the Saints had three players with multiple hits in the game as Salzer was two-for-three with a double and a run scored, junior left fielder Ashley Fletcher (Lebanon, Ohio/Springboro) was two-for-four with two runs batted-in and junior third baseman Alex Walter (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) was two-for-three with a RBI.
In the nightcap, the Saints held Mount St. Joseph scoreless and plated a run in the first, two in the third and two in the fifth for the 5-0 victory.
Salzer led the team at the plate as she was two-for-four with a double. Freshman designated player Haley Shuemake (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) had a two-run home run in the fifth inning.
In the circle, junior pitcher Ronni Burns (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) earned the win as she pitched seven scoreless innings and gave up only one hit, while striking out four.
Thomas More returns to action tomorrow (Friday, March 29) as it hosts Westminster College in both teams' Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opening doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Thomas More Field.
