(ADA, Ohio) – The Thomas More College Saints volleyball team opened the 2017 season today at the 39th Annual Ohio Northern Invitational going 0-2. The Saints fell to Case Western Reserve, 3-1, in the first match of the day and again to Carnegie Mellon, 3-0.
In the first match of the day, the Spartans outfought the Saints 25-21, 20-25, 21-25, and 22-25. First-year outside hitter, Carlee Lambert made a promising debut to the season, recording 18 kills. Jenna Fessler led the team in assists, putting up 28 in the match and Alli Borders adding another 19. Outside hitters Madison Krumpelman, Jenna Mummert and Jessica Ginn helped the Saints' offence with three service aces each. Rachel Bronner recorded 19 digs to help the Saints' defense.
The Tartans defeated the Saints in three sets, 13-25, 22-25, and 20-25. Defensive specialist Rachel Bronner was the leader again putting up 22 digs with outside hitter and setter Alli Borders adding another 14. Rana Cousin recorded eight kills, Madison Krumpelman was not far behind with six kill of her own. Borders also led the team in assists with 16. Together as a team, the Saints recorded seven services aces.
Thomas More returns to action tomorrow in the second day of the Ohio Northern Invitational versus Ohio Northern at 12:30 p.m. and again against Defiance at 2:30 p.m.
